Milwaukee Paranormal Conference Returns Sept. 24-26, 2021

Hello, paranormal fans! As a girl once said, “they’re baaaaaaack!” We had an online only conference last year (pandemic!) and are glad to say we are returning with an in-person event this fall (we will also be broadcasting some of it online for paranormal fans around the world).

The Milwaukee Paranormal Conference was founded in 2015 by author Tea Krulos. The vision has always been to provide fascinating guest speakers, panels, documentaries, and activities related to paranormal investigation, Ufology, cryptozoology, folklore, and all things strange and eerie. It is also an event that celebrates local artists, crafters, musicians, and businesses. It is informative, a great chance to meet people with similar interests, and we also try to make it a helluva fun time.

Our presenting sponsor this year is American Ghost Walks, which offers walking ghost tours in Milwaukee, Chicago, throughout the Midwest and beyond.

Please note this event is put together by a small band of merry, hardworking volunteers who are all always busy with a million things, so be patient! Below is a list of events, speakers, and vendors. It isn’t complete, because some details are still being worked out, but this will give an idea of some of the events and people who will be there. We will be updating this post with times and ticket links as we get them.

Our logo this year was created by Milwaukee artist Estephanie Mendoza

You Won’t Believe Your Ears at the 88Nine Mystery Sound Booth!

MKEParaCon_SoundBooth_Banner.jpg
Located in the UWM Union Ballroom Lounge, just outside the vendor hall. Available for listening at the conference 10-5 Saturday, 10-4 Sunday.

Listen to 88Nine Radio Milwaukee, check out event listings and more at: www.radiomilwaukee.org

Supporting sponsors: Liquid Crescent Design, Rebel Wipes

The 88Nine Mystery Sound Booth is a chance for you to sit down at three listening stations to hear audio clips recorded by researchers in the paranormal research fields. Each station has a program that will lead you through a few clips and then you can move on to the next station.

soundbooth_posters-01Listening Station #1: Ghost Whisper EVPs

EVPs or “Electronic Voice Phenomenon” refer to strange ghostly whispers paranormal investigators pick up on their audio recording equipment while investigating haunted locations. We have sets of recordings passed on to us from local team Paranormal Investigators of Milwaukee (who will also be at the conference) and our friends at TnT Paranormal Investigators (with chapters in Chicago, Orlando, and other locations). What are these bone chilling whispers in the dark trying to say?

Listening Station #2: Bigfoot!soundbooth_posters-02

Jim Sherman was a 2015 Milwaukee Paranormal Conference guest speaker and is a Michigan field representative for the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization. He has recorded some bloodcurdling howls while out on Bigfoot expeditions that he believes is the legendary Sasquatch. Listen to these odd howls and whoops and cancel your camping plans for next summer…maybe forever.

soundbooth_posters-03Listening Station #3: Numbers Stations

During the Cold War “Numbers Stations” proliferated. These broadcasts consisted of transmissions of people counting, strains of music, random words. Spies would know what time and frequency to tune in via shortwave radio to listen to the transmission and decode them. Some mysterious numbers station still exist! We have some recordings of transmissions here with info on them provided by the Numbers Stations Research and Information Center, a website run by researchers who catalog numbers station activity.

In addition to our sponsor 88Nine Radio Milwaukee, we want to thank our supporting sponsors Liquid Crescent Design and Rebel Wipes who helped put the booth together and the organizations mentioned that let us use their audio files. Stop by and take a listen!

Art provided by David Beyer Jr. (ghost) Tea Krulos (Bigfoot) and Margot Lange (Numbers Stations).

Panel Discussion: Searching for Wisconsin’s Sasquatch

11069491_806195849416465_5717982647842878178_n

Bigfoot? Prints found on a 2014 WPI Hunts the Truth expedition,

Saturday, UWM Ballroom West

Moderator: Sanjay R. Singhal (Beyond the Forest Radio). Panel: Author and researcher Linda S. Godfrey, Jay Bachochin (WPI Hunts the Truth), Larry and Jen Dopke (WI chapter of the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization).

Bigfoot, one of the star cases of cryptozoology, has been spotted in states coast to coast and, according to our panel, is no stranger to Wisconsin. Our panel consists of people who have actually gone out into the field in Wisconsin to locations like Kettle Moraine State Forest and beyond to seek evidence of this elusive mystery. They’ve had some interesting encounters along the way and will share some of the unusual (and at times frightening!) experiences they’ve had.

Our panel includes:

Linda S. Godfrey, cryptozoology researcher and author of classics like The Beast of Bray Road: Tailing Wisconsin’s Werewolf, Weird Wisconsin, American Monsters, and many more.

Jay Bachochin of the investigation group WPI Hunts the Truth has led several expeditions looking for Bigfoot and is wrapping up a documentary on his search titled Into the Woods.

Larry and Jen Dopke are leaders of the local branch of the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization (BFRO is the group  represented on the show Finding Bigfoot) and have led several Wisconsin expeditions for the organization, in addition to filing reports from witnesses. (See an example HERE from earlier this year.)

Our moderator Sanjay R. Singhal is an investigator and host of the Beyond the Forest Radio show, in which he shares his own experiences and talks to other field researchers.

You can catch Sanjay interviewing the Dopkes TONIGHT (Aug.2) on Beyond the Forest.

Additionally, a trailer was just released for Into the Woods, that stars panelist Jay Bachochin and documents his research along with Mary Marshall, who we’re glad to say is also a 2016 guest speaker.

2015 Milwaukee Para Con Report

The Milwaukee Paranormal Conference drew a huge crowd and was a fun, successful day. We will be back in 2016!

The Milwaukee Paranormal Conference drew a huge crowd and was a fun, successful day. We will be back in 2016!

Saturday: wow, what a day! You know, when I first thought of the idea I knew we would have a good crowd, but I was like how many people will actually show up…300? 500?

Well, it turns out about 900 showed up. Here is some notes on the day.

THANK YOU

* Let’s start with some thank yous. Our programs got printed over a week before the con, so they were not up to date with last minute changes. Volunteers included members of the Paranormal Investigators of Milwaukee, Valerie and Stevens Point Paranormal, Kathy, Kimberly, Tammy, Ari, Shane, Tim, Paul, Cat, Margot, Rita, David B, David G, and Jim. Thank you so much for helping and in many cases doing longer shifts than I originally asked for. Allison Jornlin stepped in quickly to fill Ursula Bielski’s spot on my panel after Ursula had to cancel and her brother Mike Huberty (of See You on the Other Side podcast) helped us with some tech troubleshooting. Dan did a fantastic job doing our tech set up for the Paranormal Pub series. The Irish Cultural & Heritage Center were accommodating and helpful and I’m glad to say staff told me they were happy with the way the event went and didn’t have any incidents.

Last, and most important, I need to thank Wendy. She not only was shooting great photos throughout the day (see more of them on our FACEBOOK PAGE) but she helped with a million little details that made things run smooth.

cat

Our volunteer Cat was dressed for the occasion!

* Thanks also to our speakers: Allison Jornlin, Mark O’Connell, Marc Eaton, Jim Sherman, Nick Roesler, Noah Leigh, J. Nathan Couch, Linda Godfrey, Melissa Tanner, Donald Schmitt (and Damien Jones and Valerie Kedrowski, who were on one of the panels). Everyone took a chance on me here and everyone was great to work with. You helped me make it happen!  There is no one on that list I wouldn’t love to have back next year and I heard positive feedback on the talks throughout the day.

mark

Mark O’Connell of the Mutual UFO Network gave a talk on UFO encounters in Wisconsin.

We gave one award this year. This was the 2015 Wisconsin Researcher of the Year Award, presented to Linda S. Godfrey in recognition of her documentation and research of paranormal case studies in Wisconsin. You can find a short blog entry on this award here: milwaukeeparacon.com/2015/06/08/2015-wisconsin-researcher-of-the-year-linda-s-godfrey/ .

* Our fantastic sponsors this year: 91:7FM, KGRA radio, CultofWeird.com, OnMilwaukee.com, The Rundown Live, Feral House and Process Media, Clark Graphics, Wendy Schreier Photography, Beyer Beware Productions. I also want to thank these businesses for your involvement: UberDork Cafe, People’s Books Co-operative, Stay Rad Screenprinting and all of our wonderful vendors (the list is still up here: milwaukeeparacon.com/activities/).

ZS

Zombie Squad: one of 26 groups and vendors represented on the vendor floor.

*Last, a big thanks to YOU for showing up. Donations streamed in and those helped us immensely with costs like venue rental, paying speakers some travel costs, printing, supplies, etc. We made a little extra and that money is going straight to next year’s event costs. Everyone there was a great audience. I wish I could have met and talked with everyone, but I was on the run all day.

bigfootphotobooth

Conference speaker Allison Jornlin and her brother Mike Huberty of See You on the Other Side podcast pose with an unknown cryptid in the Bigfoot Photo Booth.

T-SHIRTS

I knew our t-shirts were pretty cool, but I didn’t expect then to completely sell out by about 3pm. People were disappointed by this, but I’ve got good news: we’re going to do a reprint. I think we are going to limit it to our popular glow-in-the dark on black shirt. We will take pre-orders online for a couple weeks, then it’ll take a couple weeks to make the shirts. We’ll arrange a pick up date and shipping options. As soon as that pre-order info is available, I will be posting it here on the site.

Noah

Noah Leigh of the Paranormal Investigators of Milwaukee gave one of three talks (and a panel) on the topics of ghosts and paranormal investigation.

GLITCH

I want to thank people for being patient. This was our first year event and a learning experience. Overall, I think things went as smoothly as possible. There are things to consider for next year, for sure– the vendor area was too crowded, the speaker timeline was a nail biter of a tight timeline, but I think we made it work ok. As my friend put it, “having a big crowd of people is a good problem to have.” But now we have a better idea of what works and what doesn’t and I want to let you know, I always appreciate your feedback and suggestions: milwaukeeparacon@gmail.com

In the pub we had an issue showing Bradley James Kroll’s clip from his film P.I.M.: A Paranormal Documentary. Here is the YouTube link to that clip: www.youtube.com/watch?v=PvpE6gmqlsw&app=desktop

I’m also hoping Bradley will be able to screen his full doc at next year’s event, and I apologize that it didn’t go according to plan this year.

Couch

J. Nathan Couch’s talk on the strange case of Goatman entranced an audience in the Paranormal Pub series downstairs.

2016: WE NEED YOU AGAIN

It is just a couple days later and I am already so excited for 2016. I have a lot of ideas that I’m thrilled to share with you in the near future. Right now I’ll say that it will happen in October 2016. That is about a year and four months away, but that extra time will be used to a plan a bigger 2 DAY event. We will have all the stuff you loved this year and a whole lot more.

During the summer, I will be brainstorming on the con and what and where it will be, but I will make an announcement on dates a little later in the summer. There will be lots of opportunities next year for volunteers, vendors, sponsors, speakers/ panelists, activity leaders, etc. We will solicit all that as things begin to shape up more.

Don

Donald Schmitt gave a passionate talk about his long career examining the Roswell UFO crash.

TEA KRULOS @ PEOPLE’S BOOKS JUNE 18

I want to also mention that I will be doing an in-store appearance at People’s Books Cooperative (804 E. Center Street) on Thursday, June 18, 6pm. I’ll be talking about my books, Milwaukee Para Con, ghost stories from my neighborhood (Riverwest), and future projects. People’s Books will have copies of both my books (Heroes in the Night and Monster Hunters) and quite a few titles related to paranormal topics that they tabled with (there’s a couple titles I want to pick up myself!) After my talk, I’m inviting everyone to join me at the Riverwest Public House (a couple blocks away) to have a drink and chat if you are so inclined. It’ll be fun!
