That’s a Wrap on the Summer Writing Contest!

13442382_1135585476487639_1518225481597983368_n

When the clock tolled twelve midnight last night, our Summer Short Fiction Contest (presented with our friends Cult of Weird) came to a conclusion. And what good timing– we’re just starting to feel a hint of Fall in the air.

We received 40 entrants to our contest (more than our expectation!) and we got quite a mix of creative ideas for paranormal stories set here in our home state of Wisconsin. The stories offered us a ghoulish parade of haunted houses, eerie cornfields, and things that go splash in the night in Lake Michigan, among other frights. These stories our now in the hands of our judges, who we’re sure will read them with all the lights on!

Our judges include representatives from Furrow, a literary organization and magazine for undergraduates at UW-Milwaukee, UW-Washington County’s creative writing department, and Cult of Weird. We are shooting for a Sept. 15 announcement, but bear with us as judging might take longer with such a great turn out.

1st place winner gets a conference VIP pass, their story printed in our conference program, and a prize pack. 2nd and 3rd place will have their stories posted on our website and will receive a 2-day Super Pass and prize packs. Prize packs include candles from Grave Digger Candles, signed books from conference speakers, Milwaukee Paranormal Conference merch, and more. The top 3 will also be invited to read their stories at the conference in a session hosted by author Kat de Falla in Room 191.

Most importantly, we’d like to give a heartfelt thanks to everyone who took time to submit their stories. We are thrilled with the interest in this contest and can’t wait to share the results. Good luck to all!

You can help us make our programming possible by pre-ordering tickets and merch via our Indiegogo. We need your support to make this happen! igg.me/at/milwaukeeparacon

Guest Speaker: Ursula Bielski

14194487_10153731049325474_1356456840_n“Haunted Bachelors Grove,” Sunday, Wisconsin Room

Ursula Bielski is the founder of Chicago Hauntings, Inc. and the host of PBS’ The Hauntings of Chicago (WYCC).

An historian, author, and parapsychologist, she has been writing and lecturing about Chicago’s supernatural folklore and the paranormal for nearly 20 years, and is recognized as a leading authority on the Chicago region’s ghostlore and cemetery history. She is the author of five popular and critically acclaimed books on the same subjects, all published by Lake Claremont Press.

Ursula’s interests in Chicago ghost hunting began at a young age. She grew up in a haunted house on Chicago’s north side and received an early education in Chicago history from her father, a Chicago police officer, who introduced Ursula to the ghosts at Graceland Cemetery, Montrose Point and the old lockup at the storied Maxwell Street Police Station. Since that time Ursula has been involved in countless investigations of haunted sites in and around Chicago.

Aside from her writing, Ursula has been featured on numerous television documentaries, including productions by the A&E Network, The History Channel, The Learning Channel, SyFy, The Travel Channel, and PBS. She’s been a judge on “Paranormal Challenge” and a regular guest on “Ghost Adventures” and the “Maury Show,” as well as a favorite lecturer at Darkness Events.

She also appears regularly on local Chicago television and radio and lectures throughout the year at various libraries, historical and professional societies. In addition to her books, Ursula is the author of numerous scholarly articles exploring the links between history and the paranormal, including articles published in the International Journal of Parapsychology. Ursula is a past editor of PA News, the quarterly newsletter of the Parapsychological Association, a past president and board member of the Pi Gamma Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the national history honor society, and holds membership in the Society of Midland Authors.

A graduate of St. Benedict High School in Chicago, Ursula holds a B.A. degree in history from Benedictine University and an M.A. in American cultural and intellectual history from Northeastern Illinois University. Her academic explorations include the Spiritualist movement of the 19th century and its transformation into psychical research and parapsychology, and the relationships among belief, experience, science, and religion.

Ursula’s latest book, Haunted Bachelors Grove, parted of the Haunted America series from Arcadia Publishing explores the famous haunted cemetery Ursula has been researching for almost three decades.

Let the Cello Lead You

Let the sounds of the cello lead you to our VIP dinner, a most unique soiree, taking place the evening of Friday, October 14 at the Mitchell Park Pavilion on the Lagoon (near the Domes). After arriving, you might find yourself seated next to a foremost authority on cryptozoology, someone who actively investigates UFO sightings, or members of a team that dedicated to capturing evidence that ghosts exist. It’s a chance to be social and enjoy dinner with Milwaukee Paranormal Conference speakers, behind the scenes staff, and your fellow VIPs. Food and drink will be provided, and you’ll be treated to a performance by acclaimed cellist Janet Schiff.

Janet creates music that is beautiful, rich, haunting, mixing old  (one of her cellos, made in Romania, is 103 years old) with new– electronic loopers allow her to layer her riffs. It gives her music an “enigmatic quality” as Milwaukee Paranormal Conference director Tea Krulos described when he profiled her band Nineteen Thirteen in a 2011 article. The other half of Nineteen Thirteen is the brilliant percussionist Victor DeLorenzo, founding member of Milwaukee’s favorite sons, the Violent Femmes.

We’re thrilled to be able to offer this intimate solo performance for our VIPs.

In addition to the dinner party, VIPs get into both days (Oct.15-16) of our conference at the UWM Student Union for free. Check out our updated schedule and start planning which talks, panels, and workshops you want to check out.

VIPs also get into our Raven’s Ball masquerade party for free. This is taking place Saturday night (Oct.15) after the conference at the Irish Cultural and Heritage Center and features performances from Dead Man’s Carnival, Quasimondo theater, Sunspot, Gnarrenschiff and Tamarind Tribal Belly Dance, Subspace, and more. It also features a big costume contest. Check out a Facebook event page here: www.facebook.com/events/286709081708240/

Special Activity: Ghost Story Open Mic

Sunday, Wisconsin Room, with your hosts with the mosts, Deadgar’s Dark Coffin Classics!

Open-Mic-Media-Detail-CCHere’s how this idea came about. Con director Tea Krulos noticed last year at our first con that a number of people were enjoying having an environment where they could talk about their own supernatural experiences. People were talking to investigation groups on the vendor floor, podcasters recorded some of their stories, and Krulos himself heard a few hair-raising tales.

Later, Krulos was on assignment with M magazine writing a short round up of open mic nights around town– comedy, music, poetry, etc.– and the idea hit him like a peanut butter truck crashing into a jelly factory…Ghost Story Open Mic.

This is how it’ll work. Think of a story you’d like to share. Maybe it’s something eerie that you’ve experienced directly, or a creepy story told to you by a relative or friend. Or maybe it’s a story that frightened you around the campfire when you were young. Sign up at the ticket and registration table and you’ll be given a 5 minute timeslot for the open mic. First come, first serve, so show up early to sign up. Don’t be shy– you’re among friends!
